Are Online Bargains Really Worthwhile?

Online bargains seem to scream at consumers from every web page, with online store coupons at every turn. But is online shopping really cheaper? Are online bargains too good to be true? Are those online store coupons legit?

Online shopping definitely can be cheaper if you take shopping seriously. This isn’t about taking the fun out of something that should be an enjoyable experience, but it does mean you have to take the time to examine online bargains and online store coupons and make sure they work for you. Just as in the store down the street, sometimes online bargains are not everything you hope for. Remember a few things:

• Use reputable e-tailers. There are fly-by-nighters on the web (only too many!) and they, too, boast online bargains and throw online store coupons at you loud and clear. Take a few minutes to examine who is selling. Are there reviews or testimonials you can access? What about customer service? Can you reach a live sales representative? Ask the person’s name, in case you need to call back. What guarantees are in place? Find out the company’s return policies.

• Make sure the online store coupons are legitimate and timely. Some sites (including DealSharks) are better than others at keeping coupon codes and online store coupons up-to-date. Make sure the online store coupons you want haven’t expired and are valid in your area.

• Comparison shop. Just like when you’re shopping in good old-fashioned bricks and mortar stores, never accept the first online bargain you spot as the best. You may find that using a coupon for free express shipping can actually result in more savings than a $25-off coupon for that same store, for example.

• Watch for extreme shipping charges. And online bargain can be rendered irrelevant by some crafty e-tailer hitting you hard at the check-out. Know what’s in store.

Online shopping can be particularly economical if you live in a rural area and have to drive a significant distance to a shopping outlet. Online bargains become much easier to find, especially given you’ll have more choice in products and e-tailers. Again, don’t forget the online store coupon! They’re money in your pocket for just a few minutes of extra surfing.

Don’t forget: your time is valuable too. Consider how long you would have spent driving to a store (or several, to properly compare prices), parking, poking around…and suddenly that online bargain is a little better again.

There are items that may always be cheaper in stores. Some bulky, heavy purchases carry such high shipping fees that even a drop-dead online bargain with the best online store coupon won’t make it worth your while. Big box stores and major chains have such purchasing power that some items on their shelves will be the best price, bar none.

On the other hand, e-tailers don’t have many of the overhead costs traditional stores do, and are therefore often the perfect places to find the best price.

Overall, if you take into account the convenience and speed of online shopping, the availability of online bargains and online store coupons and the variety of items and e-stores, online bargains may indeed be your best ones. Shop securely, compare prices, use online store coupons, and bring home the online bargains.
